Well Grounded
Leading Edge Business Practises
To maintain their competitive advantage, Manitoba aerospace companies
have continuously increased productivity and quality through their
commitment to lean business practises and advanced technology. The
tenets of "continuous improvement", "just-in-time manufacturing", "six
sigma", value stream mapping, and the use of automated design,
manufacturing and management systems have transformed local companies
and are now industry standard in the province. Local companies have
received national and international recognition for strides made in
these programs and the province has become a "Mecca" for
companies wanting to reduce costs and increase quality.
Workforce
With 8,500 trained professionals graduating yearly, Manitoba is home
to a highly skilled workforce that is nationally recognized for its
prairie work ethic.
Established in 1992, the Manitoba Aerospace Human Resources Co-ordinating Committee (MAHRCC) assists industry and educational institutions to develop and deliver training for existing and prospective employees. Partnering with federal and provincial departments and industry, MAHRCC co-ordinates secondary and post-secondary students' access to training to meet the needs of local aerospace companies.
Manitoba has built a highly-sophisticated training infrastructure that is unparalleled in Canada. Since 1992 the Federal and Provincial Governments and Industry, in partnership, have invested $29.6 million in Manitoba aerospace training programs. The results have been remarkable with over 400 courses completed and over 4,000 persons trained.
Responding to the growing needs of local companies such as Aveos Technical Services, a new facility will provide licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineering training.
Manitoba Aerospace Human Resources Coordinating Committee
Manitoba Aerospace Association Inc. (MAAI) has worked with its sister
organization, Manitoba Aerospace Human Resources Coordinating Committee
(MAHRCC) to develop a comprehensive education and training infrastructure
in the province. We have strategic relationships with the following
institutions:
- Tec Voc High School
- Stevenson Aviation and Aerospace Training Centre at Red River College
- Faculty of Engineering, University of Manitoba
- Apprenticeship Branch, Manitoba Competitiveness, Training and Trade
- Murdoch MacKay Collegiate
Strategic Location
Strategically located in the geographical centre of North America and
with close proximity to the United States, Winnipeg, Manitoba is a
transportation hub that allows easy access to any part of the continent.
Located along the mid-continent trade corridor, Manitoba has transportation
options including a mid-continent seaport---Churchill---located about
900 kilometres from Winnipeg. Churchill is also home to the Churchill
Rocket and Research Centre, currently managed by the Manitoba government
but available for lease by interested businesses. The province's Central
Time zone makes it easy for local businesses to communicate with contacts
across the continent.
Manitoba's responsible and forward-thinking fiscal and regulatory environment promotes stability. Provincial government loans for business plans, feasibility studies, capital expansions and technology commercialization improve opportunity for aerospace businesses locating here. In addition, land prices and operating costs are extremely competitive.
